During the last two years we have heard a lot about augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), which are very similar but have some differences.
Two technologies that are booming in some industries, even in the real estate sector we can already see developers or real estate companies implementing them for their sales marketing and commercialization strategies.
To take advantage of the opportunities offered by these technologies, it is important to avoid confusing them and to have a thorough understanding of how they work:
AUGMENTED REALITY
Augmented reality (AR) combines the real environment with digital objects. You are not immersed in an artificial world but can observe your surroundings with a virtual complement.
This technology uses devices, such as cell phones with lenses, helmets or special glasses, to project information on any existing space. In the case of glasses, such as Google Glass, they must incorporate a CPU to manage virtual reality through transparent lenses to be able to see reality through them. If a smarthpone or other mobile device is used, they process the digital elements and reproduce them on their screens while showing the real physical environment through the cameras.
Augmented reality became known with the mythical Pokémon Go game. Through the app, the streets were filled with users "capturing" Pokémon through their mobile device. This phenomenon was achieved by projecting a digital image of the Pokémon onto the real environment.
This technology can also be implemented in architecture or even interior design. With augmented reality we can test digital furniture in a room of our home or project a building in the location where we want to build it.
VIRTUAL REALITY
In virtual reality (VR) there is nothing real, everything we see is a virtual world. In other words, a non-existent environment is generated through 3D modeling, which creates a complete sensory experience without seeing anything of reality. To fully experience virtual reality it is necessary to use audiovisual devices: special VR glasses and headphones.
There are two designs of virtual reality glasses: those that can be viewed directly from a built-in screen, such as the Oculus Go, or those that require a smartphone to act as a screen, such as Samsung's Gear VR or Cardboard. The latter glasses, as they require an external screen to project the image, can often also be managed from a computer where the virtual environment can be displayed and moved. All VR glasses completely cover your eyes so that you can only see the screen and incorporate motion sensors that, when you move your head, detect the turns and allow you to move around the virtual world.
On the other hand, to achieve a complete virtual immersion, it is advisable to use a headset. These will help you to orient yourself according to the sounds you perceive. In addition, some models of virtual glasses also include a remote control to interact by pointing to an object or menu within the virtual environment.
