360 virtual tours vs. 360 rendering: Today we show you several examples and explain their differences.

Getting into 3D and virtual reality is discovering a new world, especially when we are just starting to get interested in this topic.

Many of the terms used sound similar and that can confuse us into thinking that they refer to the same thing. But they don't! And here we tell you the main differences so that you will never doubt again when you come across them.

What are 360° virtual tours?

The 360º virtual tour is a virtual environment created from a series of 360º images in which we can move freely without a predefined itinerary.

In it we can see a real environment or not, modeled in 3D in detail with the mouse, through virtual reality goggles or other device that supports this route.

What is a 3D render?

A render is a digital image that is generated from a 3D model or scenario in three dimensions, which is rendered through a render engine and finally translated into a digital static photo.

To achieve the result, several processes are used to generate a sensation of depth, give texture to the different elements of the image to make it more realistic and generate different lighting effects.

The objective is to generate a realistic static image from any perspective of the model.

If you want us to explain more technically what a render is, some time ago we wrote an article that might interest you.

What is a 360º panorama?

This is an equirectangular image taken with a digital or real 360º camera from a fixed static point.

They are several photographs that can be real or virtual, glued to each other in the form of a sphere, and in which we are located in the center.

This allows us to see the whole environment in 360º from the point where we are located in a fixed way, without moving.

In the virtual world it is only necessary to configure the 360º camera from our favorite 3d or rendering software, however if we take 360º images in reality we will have to make an investment to buy a specific camera that will allow us to take this type of images.

Currently there are several affordable models starting at 250€ such as the ricoh tetha SC2.

Summary:

A render is a static image in which we can not interact in any way that serves to visualize a fixed space in 3D in a hyper-realistic way, in the 360º virtual tours we can see everything that happens around us from a fixed point without moving around the space only on our own axis and in the virtual tour we can go through the entire itinerary and move our frame directing our view in all directions while we move through the space at our will.
